Last year, Barlett thinks she found the closest thing to a cure in China, where doctors are using stem cells to try to develop new optic nerves. It's a procedure that's never even been clinically tested in the United States because of the government's severe restrictions on stem cell research.

Those transplants are simple infusions of newborn umbilical cord cells, pumped through an IV or an epidural-like procedure.

Barlett and Rylea spent a month in China, trying not to get their hopes up too high since Rylea had never even been sensitive to light.

"A week after her first transplant, she responded to a pin light by turning away each time, she said.

It was a first and, in the nine months since those stem cell transplants, Barlett says Rylea's progress has been miraculous.

For Rylea, mom says the improvement has been so significant that she's planning another trip to China this summer. It's a labor of love for her to see just how much Rylea can really see.

"For now, where we are, it's an absolute blessing. It's one of those things where we hope for the absolute best but take whatever you're given, said Barlett.

There are plans for a medical facility in Grand Cayman to begin treatment on a young American boy afflicted with a rare spinal disorder using controversial stem cell replacement therapy, a New York newspaper reports.  WHY IS IT CONTROVERSIAL?  WHEN WE READ FURTHER, IT DESCRIBES CORD BLOOD STEM CELL TREATMENT, NOT EMBRYONIC STEM CELLS:

According to the Oneonta Daily Star, the Utter family from New York are currently raising money to cover the medical costs to treat two- year- old Dylan Utter's spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). Dylan was diagnosed with the disease when he was 15 months old, said his mother, Erica Utter.

SMA is a disease of the motor neurons that affects the voluntary muscles used for activities such as crawling, walking and swallowing. According to the Families of SMA website, fsma.org, the experimental procedure entails extracting compatible stem cells from umbilical cords, to be used in the replacement of dead or dying motor neurons in the patient's body.  A VERY SAD STORY.  I HOPE IT WORKS OUT FOR THE CHILD. HOWEVER, NOTE THE PART IN BOLD ABOUT UMBILICAL CORDS, IT WILL COME INTO PLAY BELOW. 


The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the health regulatory body in the US, has not approved stem cell treatment. Consequently, the procedure is not covered by any health insurance providers. The stem cell infusion treatment, reportedly costing US$28,000, will be administered in the Cayman Islands because it is not available in the United States, Dylan's mother said.  OH, I SEE, MAYBE THAT IS WHY IT IS CONTROVERSIAL,  IT ISN'T APPROVED IN THE US YET. LET'S READ ON TO FIND OUT:

The controversy lies in the technique used to create new embryonic stem cell lines. These are the independent cells that can develop into any different cell in the body, and can be produced almost indefinitely.

The online Gene Almanac states that the technique requires the destruction of the blastocyst, which is the fertilised egg as it exists in week one of pregnancy, before its development into an embryo.  OH, I GUESS I WAS WRONG.  I DON'T UNDERSTAND, AT FIRST, THE WRITER TALKS ABOUT UMBILICAL CORD STEM CELL TREATMENT, BUT NOW HE IS TALKING ABOUT BLASTOCYSTS IN THE FIRST WEEK OF PREGNANCY BEFORE ITS DEVELOPMENT AS AN EMBRYO.   I AM CERTAIN THE BOY IS GOING TO RECEIVE UMBILICAL CORD BLOOD STEM CELLS WHICH ARE EXTRACTED FROM THE UMBILICAL CORD OF A NEWBORN BABY SO WHY IS THE WRITER GOING OFF ON A TANGENT ON SOMETHING ALMOST TOTALLY UNRELATED TO IT.  THIS IS WHY AMERICANS AND MOST OF THE WORLD ARE CONFUSED- BY ARTICLES SUCH AS THESE THAT TRY TO MAKE CONTROVERSY WHERE NONE EXISTS.  WHAT IS CONTROVERSIAL ABOUT A FAMILY GOING ABROAD TO TRY TO HELP THEIR SON TO RECEIVE STEM CELLS EXTRACTED FROM UMBILICAL CORDS?

She was accepted as a volunteer for the treatment at a clinic in Delhi, India.  A VOLUNTEER?  SHE IS RECEIVING STEM CELL TREATMENT FOR FREE?

The program will cost about forty-thousand dollars. Friends and supporters have been raising funds for the woman who still loves being in the pool. We caught up with Ryan at the Boulder YMCA, poolside of course.  40 GRAND?  THAT DOESN'T SOUND LIKE A VOLUNTEER.  IS SHE REALLY PAYING 40 K FOR EMBRYONIC STEM CELLS?

While President Bush has been opposed to embryonic stem cell research, Japanese doctors are having success using umbilical cords to harvest stem cells.  THE WRITER GIVES THE OBLIGATORY "BUSH IS THE BAD GUY" TREATMENT.  TO BE FAIR, THE WRITER ISN'T LYING, BUT THE WRITER IS MISLEADING AND CONFUSING READERS WITH THAT STATEMENT, PROBABLY INTENTIONALLY.   UMBILICAL CORD STEM CELLS AND EMBRYONIC STEM CELLS ARE NOT THE SAME.  UMBILICAL CORD BLOOD STEM CELLS ARE DERIVED FROM THE UMBILICAL CORD OF A BABY.  EMBRYONIC STEM CELLS ARE DERIVED FROM THE EMBRYO OF AN UNBORN BABY.  WHAT DOES BUSH AND EMBRYONIC STEM CELLS HAVE TO DO WITH JAPANESE DOCTORS AND UMBILICAL CORD STEM CELLS?  ALSO, TO PILE ON A LITTLE MORE, WHILE JAPAN MAY VERY WELL BE USING UMBILICAL CORD CELLS IN SOME TREATMENTS, READERS OF THIS BLOG KNOW THAT MOST OF THE CORD BLOOD STEM CELL TREATMENTS GO ON IN CHINA.  I SUSPECT THE WRITER CONFUSED JAPAN AND CHINA

They have been treating Americans willing to travel to Japan for a few years.

No word on if Bush will allow that type of treatment even though it doesn't involve embryos.  BUSH DOESN'T DECIDE WHAT TREATMENTS ARE ALLOWED OR DISALLOWED.  THE FDA DOES.  IT DOESN'T MATTER WHO IS THE NEXT PRESIDENT, OBAMA, HILLARY OR MCCAIN, REPUBLICAN OR DEMOCRAT, THEY WON'T DECIDE WHICH STEM CELL TREATMENTS ARE ALLOWED.  THEY MAY BE ABLE TO DECIDE WHICH STEM CELL RESEARCH IS TO BE FUNDED USING (WASTING?) TAX PAYER MONEY, BUT THEY HAVE NO INFLUENCE ON THE FDA WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR DECIDING WHAT TREATMENTS ARE ALLOWED. 

THESE QUESTIONS LEAVE ME DOUBTING THE AMOUNT OF RESEARCH GOING INTO THIS STORY.  I THINK THE YOUNG LADY IS GOING TO INDIA FOR CORD BLOOD STEM CELL TREATMENT.  THE STORY JUST DOESN'T ADD UP.  HOWEVER, ALTHOUGH I DOUBT THE FACTS OF THIS STORY, I STILL BELIEVE THERE IS A YOUNG LADY IN NEED OF HELP WHO IS IN NEED OF STEM CELL THERAPY, AND I WISH HER THE BEST OF HEALTH ON HER JOURNEY-DM

''We find almost uniformly that the American public is confused and misinformed about stem cells in medical research and therapy. The average American public does not understand the distinction between embryonic stem cells and umbilical cord stem cells.'' (AND AUTOLOGOUS STEM CELLS-DM)
