AUSTRALIANS with type 2 diabetes are signing up for a costly, unproven stem cell “cure” at a South American clinic.
The San Nicolas Clinic says 89per cent of its patients are insulin and medication-free 90 days after being injected with their own stem cells. The treatment costs $US16,000 ($18,500).
Some patients who have undergone the same stem-cell therapy for heart disease - which is illegal in all Western countries - say it has given them “a new lease on life”.
But the world’s leading stem-cell scientists warn that patients desperate for a miracle cure are putting themselves at grave risk by undergoing a treatment yet to be fully tested in humans.
The San Nicolas Clinic is bank-rolled by a US energy corporation and is part of the International Clinics of Regenerative Medicine.
ICORM director Mike Bartlett said more than 300 patients had been successfully treated for heart disease, diabetes, emphysema and Parkinson’s disease at its hospitals in South America and Asia.
Mr Bartlett spent last week in Sydney meeting diabetes specialists and cardiologists to encourage them to refer their end-stage patients.
To date, 31 Australians with type2 diabetes and seven with heart disease had indicated a wish to travel to Argentina as soon as possible, and a further 208 had made inquiries, he said.
Dr Ross Walker, a Sydney Adventist Hospital cardiologist and author of the bestselling book The Cell Factor, said he would travel to the San Nicolas Clinic early next year to assess the claims for himself.
“I believe it is the next big thing in medicine but I want to see solid scientific evidence that it doesn’t do any harm before recommending it for the wider population,” he said.
Under the patented process, 250millilitres of a patient’s blood is manipulated to yield millions of therapeutic stem cells. The cells are then injected into the diseased organ or tissue. Patients are usually sent home within two days.
Numerous patients have testified to the “miraculous” effects of the treatment, which uses adult stem cells, not the more ethically-questionable embryonic stem cells. Keith Fanning said the $70,000 he spent flying his dying father, Mick, 75, to Bangkok for stem-cell therapy was “the best $70,000 I ever spent”. Oxygen-dependent and barely able to walk before the procedure in July, Mr Fanning’s ejection fraction (EF) - the measurement of the capacity at which the heart is pumping - increased so much that he can now breathe, talk and eat on his own.
His insulin dependency is also down and his violent shaking from Parkinson’s has virtually disappeared.
“I’m the ultimate sceptic and it’s the closest thing I’ve seen to a miracle,” he said from his Queensland home.
In October, Lynley White, from Melbourne, spent $45,000 to have 30 stem-cell injections in her heart after traditional drug therapy failed to improve her cardiomyopathy.
“My doctors laughed at me and said I had rocks in my head but so far so good. I’m feeling more and more energetic,” she said.
At 62, she was unlikely to receive the heart transplant she needed to keep going. Of the 120 people who have tried the treatment at Bangkok Heart Hospital, four have died. But Mrs White said her only fear was she would not survive the anaesthetic.
“My ejection fraction was getting lower and lower - it got down to 12 when it should be 55 plus - and I thought ‘I’ve got to help myself’,” she said.
Immediately after treatment her EF rating was up by 64 per cent.
Dr Teija Peura, director of human embryonic stem cell laboratories at the Australian Stem Cell Centre, said: “It’s understandable that patients who are desperate can’t wait for treatment to go through the approval process but it’s dangerous because these countries are giving treatment which they don’t know how or why [it] works.”
The International Society for Stem Cell Research said the only stem cell-based therapy with clearly proven efficacy was bone marrow transplantation for blood disorders and leukaemia.

SACRAMENTO — They are not from human embryos, but the stem cells being packed into the spine of Perry Anderson may help him heal from a surgery that failed to heal the first time, leaving him hobbled and unable to work for nearly three years.
The same cells, derived from bone marrow, may also one day help heart attack patients recover, ease the misery of inflammatory bowel disease, and allow diabetics to continue producing insulin.
While the ethical debate rages over the use of stem cells taken from discarded human embryos, bone marrow stem cells, harvested both from cadavers and from live donors, are being developed for use against a range of illnesses…

Flood straightened and bolstered Matthew’s spine with a series of rods and pins — a typical surgical treatment for severe scoliosis. Then the surgeon combined Matthew’s own stem cells, which had been concentrated to pack about 10 times more cells than the traditional method, with crushed bone from the hospital bone bank.
He injected the puttylike mixture into the upper-middle section of Matthew’s spine, between the rods, where the mixture will grow into bone and protect the spine against further curvature.
“What’s revolutionary is the use of the concentrated stem cells,” Flood said before the surgery. “We can avoid the pain of taking bone, and increase fusion.”

A BRIEF HISTORY OF STEM CELLS
Researchers have known about adult stem cells (ASC) for 40 years, embryonics (ESC) for almost as long. For most of that time, bone marrow and ASC have been successfully used to help certain forms of cancer, leukemia and a couple of uncommon diseases. Then, in 1998, two events in the USA shook the ground of the medical world forever, though it wasn’t immediately clear how it would play out.
At the University of Wisconsin, Madison, Dr. Jamie Thomson isolated, for the first time, a line of embryonic stem cells. Meanwhile, at Duke University, Prof. Doris Taylor wrote the seminal paper which let the world know that ASC had helped cure heart disease in rodents. Both doctors thought human benefits would be a very long time away.
Thomson was correct, saying it would take “decades.” Taylor was, in her own words, “a little naïve” for not realizing that the medical community would take off and use her concept virtually immediately! First came a year or two of animal tests, then, in Paris, 2000, doctors gave a dying 70-year-old heart patient bone marrow cells and he lived four years, at which time the doctors ‘fessed up and released his name. In 2001, USA pioneer Warren Sherman, MD(Columbia U, Mt. Sinai NY Hosp) went to Rotterdam and became the first American to implant ASC into a human heart.
In 2002, a very daring clinical trial led by Dr. Hans Dohmann plus six colleagues in Brazil took 21 transplant candidates and gave 14 of them bone marrow cells. The results were so spectacular that the AHA accepted the paper and it was presented in 2003. Five of the seven in the control group opted in to make a total of 19 stem cell transplants. The mortality rate for transplant candidates is about 35% per year. At that rate there would be, of those 19, only 2.2 patients still alive after five years. There are, in fact, 12 alive as of Dec. 31, 2007; more than five years down the road.
In 2003, Dr. Andreas Zeiher of the Goethe Institute in Frankfurt began much larger trials. As of 2007, he has overseen more ASC implants into hearts than anyone, both in and out of clinical trials.
In 2004, Dr. Amit Patel of Pittsburgh completed two of the most successful trials ever, especially when, in Uruguay, he proved, on a group of ischemic heart failure patients, that a bypass plus cells was infinitely better than a bypass only. That same year, TheraVitae, in Israel, developed a new, powerful blood-derived stem cell and dared to treat the sickest patients no clinical trial would consider. Also in 2004, one of the Brazilians, Dr. Perrin, came to Texas and used the Brazil results to get the first ASC heart clinical trial approved by the FDA. Over a dozen such approvals were granted in the next 12-18 months.
Meanwhile, around the world, while USA stem cell research remains mired in politics instead of science, ASC advances in virtually every sector of medicine are rocketing forward without any sign of letting up. In 2005, Drs. Vina & Saslavsky in Argentina completed the very first successful diabetes2 stem cell clinical trial in the world: 13 out of 16 successfully cured. Spinal problems and emphysema and renal failure and cirrhosis of the liver treatments will be moving to the forefront in 2008-9.
TheraVitae has published two papers showing that ASC could easily produce the neurons that embryonic fanatics still lie about and claim cannot happen. That opened the way to research brain and nerve and immune system disorders, but America isn’t even trying. China is showing the way for neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s Spinal Cord Injury, Stroke, Multiple Sclerosis and others. By 2010 we’ll see some trials, and, knowing ASC, they will be successful.
Oh, and embryonics—nothing to report. Not one person helped. Not one trial approved (or even applied for). But lots of press releases bragging about “discoveries” and promising the moon and even the stars. Jamie Thomson, however, was spot-on when he said “decades.” To try to quiet the politics, he even helped invent a way to get ESC from adult skin, but that won’t work until 2010, if then, and, at best, we’ll still be where we are today, which is: ESC have not been involved in any of the about 2000 world-wide stem cell clinical trials, and won’t be tried in one anytime soon.
