EARLY IN MARCH I BLOGGED ABOUT TWO BROTHERS IN MINNESOTA WHO SUFFERED FROM A RARE SKIN DISEASE CALLED EPIDERMOLYSIS BULLOSA. THIS AWFUL DISEASE CAUSES THE PATIENT’S SKIN TO BLISTER AND FALL OFF. EVENTUALLY WHEN THE PATIENT GETS OLDER IT TURNS INTO A SKIN CANCER. FROM WHAT I CAN GATHER, A COUPLE IN WALES HEARD ABOUT THE FAMILY IN MINNESOTA AND NOW IS TRYING TO RAISE MONEY FOR THEIR OWN SON WHO SUFFERS FROM THE SAME DISORDER TO GET A STEM CELL TRANSPLANT. THIS WELSH COUPLE IS WATCHING ANXIOUSLY TO SEE IF THE STEM CELL THERAPY HELPS THE MINNESOTA BROTHERS AND HOPE IT CAN BE APPLIED TO THEIR OWN SON AS WELL. I WISH BOTH THE FAMILY IN MINNESOTA AND THE WELSH FAMILY ALL THE BEST. WE ARE CHEERING FOR YOU HERE.

The future looks brighter for Rebecca Grisham of Jackson, her son and daughter after treatment in early February at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville for acute myelogenous leukemia.

Smith reported that lab animal studies have found that treatment of surgically created tendon and ligament lesions with mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) results in better tissue organization, composition, and mechanics compared to controls. In addition, an equine study in the U.K. using bone marrow MSCs found that in 82 of 168 treated racehorses that were available for follow-up after one year, there was a 78% success rate (no re-injury) compared to 43% of horses conservatively treated in another study–a 35% improvement in success rate.

AN OPEN LETTER ON ADULT STEM CELL THERAPY

THIS OPEN LETTER ON STEM CELL THERAPY WAS SENT IN BY ONE OF OUR READERS. HE HAS KINDLY GIVEN ME PERMISSION TO POST IT HERE. INSTEAD OF OPENING MY BIG MOUTH TODAY, I WILL LET THE LETTER SPEAK FOR ITSELF.
I am not a scientist. I am a High School English teacher. Every statement in this letter is based on research that I found in news articles, internet web sites, and science and medical journals. Anyone who has access to the internet can learn what I have learned.
I have been a quadriplegic for fourteen years. I was a healthy, athletic seventeen-year-old when I became injured and confined to a wheelchair. I would love to walk again. I fully believe that a cure for spinal cord injuries will occur in my lifetime. Over the last few years, there have been many promising advances in stem cell research. Stem cells have the amazing ability to become any cell in the body and thus are capable of “repairing” the damage done by numerous diseases and conditions. Stem cells are found in both the cells of adults and of embryos. Debate over which source to use for stem cells has been very heated. Recently, there has been a great media push for the United States government to overturn its ban on funding research that destroys human embryos by experimenting on stem cells. As of this moment, though, the research that exists makes it clear that it is unnecessary to continue experimenting on the stem cells taken from human embryos.
First of all, evidence supports that adult stem cells hold many advantages over embryonic stem cells. For example, embryonic stem cells have a much higher risk of becoming a tumor in the patient.[i] Also, by using a patient’s own stem cells rather than injecting foreign stem cells, there will be no transplant rejection.[ii] And third, various experiments using both adult and embryonic stem cells found that adult stem cells achieved greater results.[iii]

A COUPLE FROM GEORGIA CAME ALL THE WAY TO CHINA TO RECEIVE STEM CELL TREATMENT FOR THEIR 7 MONTH OLD DAUGHTER WHO IS SUFFERING FROM OPTIC NERVE HYPOPLASIA (ONH). FOR ALL OF YOU LAYMEN (INCLUDING MYSELF WHO HAD TO LOOK IT UP ON GOOGLE), IT MEANS THE 7 MONTH YEAR OLD WAS BLIND! IS SHE BLIND NOW AFTER THE STEM CELL THERAPY? READ ON AND FIND OUT!
Treatment Seems to Yield Positive Results
After three sessions, Teague and Williams say the therapy is already working.
The doctors have told Laylah’s parents that the baby now sees light through one eye, while the other eye is dilating almost to the point where she can see light.
So far, 10 patients suffering from ONH have received the same stem-cell treatment in China, and doctors there claim that the vision of all 10 improved after the therapy.
At age 5, Rylea Barlett also received the stem-cell treatment. She, too, had been blind before.
Dr. Shalesh Kaushal, an eye specialist at the University of Florida, examined Bartlett, who is now 6, after she returned to the U.S.
“This child had essentially no light perception, and upon returning she’s had a gradual improvement — so much so that at our exam it appeared that she had formed vision,” he says. “That is to say that she could at least recognize large letters.”
Kaushal concluded that the stem-cell therapy was the only clinical explanation for her improvement. Some infants with ONH gain more vision spontaneously over the first few years of life, but Barlett was already too old for that.
Kaushal is now evaluating other patients before and after the stem-cell treatment. But he is not recommending that patients go to China; he says much more research needs to be done.
“It’s clearly a provocative result. … If this is a real, reproducible observation or effect in other patients, one may consider it as a fundamental breakthrough,” says Kaushal.
