Florida Man With SCI Improved From Stem Cells

A Florida man who has a spinal cord injury (SCI) is benefiting from stem cell research that uses adult stem cells exclusively.  David Aldrich is singing the praises of stem cell therapy in China that has helped improved his quality of life.

His Doctors Recommended He Go To China? Amazing!

Aldrich was paralyzed in a diving accident which also left him 100% blind.  In a miracle of sorts, his local US doctors actually SUGGESTED he travel to China where they were doing the research and treatment using cord blood stem cells that would change his life.

After 3 Weeks- Could See Again!

While in China, Aldrich's could see again after the third week of the therapy.  From the stem cell news article:

"While I was there, the third week, things started to come more into view," Aldrich said. "I started being able to read things." Aldrich said his breathing, speech and limb control all improved. National Geographic also followed his progress in a documentary called "Supercell."

Aldrich encouraged the use of stem cell therapies in the country. "There are so many people who suffer with diseases and spinal cord injuries that could be helped with stem cells," he said.

Aldrich has made two trips to China, and he said his vision is even better. In addition, he can now lean forward, whereas before the therapy he could only shrug his shoulders. He can also move his arms and legs and wiggle his toes.

He said he can enjoy many activities that he used to take for granted. "Being able to take my dog out for a walk everyday is the best part of my life," he said.

A Founding Father Of The Stem Cell Awareness Association

David is also one of the founders of the Stem Cell Awareness Association, an organization that is pushing to have adult stem cell therapy available in the United States as well as help sick patients seek adult stem cells outside the US.

Advances in Stem Cell Research for the Heart

The doctors had given Aaron Cathcart, a Louisiana native about a year to live. Suffering from congestive heart failure after a major heart attack, Aaron was told he was going to be yet another victim of heart disease. However, thanks to the wonders of Adult Stem Cell research, Aaron is not just living, he is "thriving" after having his own Adult Stem Cells injected back into his heart.

On June 26th, 2008, Aaron Cathcart was injected with stem cells taken from his own bone marrow and into his heart muscle in Covington, Louisiana in a clinical trial using Adult Stem Cell treatment.

Before the Adult Stem Cells

  • Ejection Fraction of 20%

  • Couldn't walk 200 feet without pain

  • Couldn't go outside if lower than 50 degrees because the cold weather would strain his heart

After the Stem Cells Were Injected into his Heart Muscle

  • Ejection Fraction of 41%- 6 months later

  • Can now take his dog for nice walks

  • the "non-functioning part of his heart that had received the adult-stem-cell injections was beating again"

Given His Life Back

Aaron now feels like he has been given his life back and his new goal is to let others know about this procedure that has saved his life and to "clear up any misconceptions there might be about adult-stem-cell research."

He also said “Everyone’s body has them (adult stem cells), and if you increase them in concentration, they can repair your body much better than normal,”

Adult Stem Cells Aren't Rocket Science

Once again, Aaron is correct, this isn't some special rocket science or splitting an atom, it is common sense.  In essence, your own stem cells are already there to repair damage to the body, let the body heal itself.  However, sometimes, there aren't enough of these stem cells to do that.  Therefore, these doctors/researchers are multiplying the amount of stem cells and then putting them into the area that needs repair- in Aaron's case it was the heart, and then they let the body's own repair mechanisms (the adult stem cells)  do what they are "born to do"- no controversy, no ethical concerns, a 3rd grader can understand this---  so why isn't it available in the United States?

FDA Regulates Adult Stem Cell Therapy Like a New Drug

Aaron was one of the lucky ones to qualify for a clinical trial, but while these clinical trials are going on, thousands of lives are being lost because in the United States, adult stem cells aren't available due to FDA regulations-  regulations that treat a person's own stem cells just like a new drug from Pfizer or Merkk- meaning 7-10 years until approval.  Until the FDA changes these archaic rules, Americans will suffer needlessly.  I'm at a loss at what to do to change this. Anyone have any ideas?

More Stem Cell Treatment Information

Here is the original stem cell article with Aaron Cathcart

That same article lists contact information for this particular heart disease trial

Stem Cells curing dogs of Leukemia, an often deadly cancer?  Using chemotherapy and stem cells taken from the dog's bone marrow?   Yes, it is true.  While this blog has well documented stem cell therapy  helping dogs with arthritis, torn muscles, hip dysplasia and joint problems among other conditions, this is the first I have heard of this stem cell treatment for Leukemia.

I did not know that dogs could be treated for Leukemia with a bone marrow transplant-- the same way humans are. Maverick the dog, owned by Howie and Marna Altman, was cured of his Leukemia after undergoing a life saving bone marrow transplant with his own Adult Stem Cells.  How does it work?  From the article::

Stem cells were taken from Maverick's blood and then returned to him after full-body radiation to kill the cancer cells in his bone marrow. He spent two weeks in isolation to allow time for the cells to regenerate. Aside from some follow up blood tests, doctors expect him to be back to normal.

"Maverick has done fantastic," said Dr. Steven Suter, a veterinary oncologist at N.C. State's College of Veterinary Medicine. "He was hardly sick at all from the radiation. He looks fantastic, he's doing fantastic, so it's a great day."

It is perhaps fitting that this is happening at North Carolina State (the only place in the US that is treating dogs with bone marrow transplants), which brings back memories of Jimmy Valvano, the basketball coach who led NC State to that miraculous basketball championship in 1983 and unfortunately lost his battle with cancer.

Who can forget Jimmy running around the court looking for somebody to hug after winning that game at the buzzer?  And later on, how can you forget a dying Jimmy V's speech of "Don't give up, Don't EVER Give Up"???  What a wonderful and courageous man- I miss you Jimmy V.  You inspired us all.

Adult Stem Cells are now helping Dogs, Cats, and Horses. Regular readers of this Adult Stem Cell research blog are already aware of this fact. However, I love these stories anyhow for two different reasons.
1. It makes me (and hopefully you) feel good to see how Adult Stem Cells improve the life of a pet and in turn the pet's owner(s).
2. Right now, because Veterinarians don't have an FDA to answer to, and realizing that the worst thing that could happen is the stem cells don't work, they are getting a head start on this. If the stem cells weren't helping dogs, cats and horses, do you think that Vet-Stem, the company that provides the stem cells  for the pets would still be in business?

Anyway, no more preaching- on to the story. This is the story of Scott Kaine and his faithful dog, Otis. Otis is 13 years old with a plethora of problems. Congestive heart failure and joints being the main ones. Otis' veterinarian recommended the stem cell therapy.

Kaine did a little Adult Stem Cell research himself and said
"It's not a magic pill, and it may not work," he said. "I figured the worst thing that would happen is I was out 2,500 bucks. But if it added a week to his life, it was worth it.

And how is Otis after the stem cell treatment?  Kaine said he can see the difference in Otis already
Otis has more energy and gets around better (booties that provide traction on Kaine's tile floors also help). He still barks plenty, sniffs everything he can, and his personality hasn't changed one bit.

Bailey has treated three animals, including Otis, since becoming certified in 2008 ” and all three are doing remarkably better, he said. Months after the stem-cell treatment, one beagle showed a 90 percent improvement in his hips on radiographic imaging.

"(Stem cell therapy) is going to be here to stay; this is going to be the next big thing in veterinary medicine," Bailey said. "We tend to be pioneers, because there are less hoops for us to jump through."

In this blog, we have well documented the effects that Adult Stem Cells (or Repair Stem Cells as I call them) have on dogs.  We have seen plenty of stories of stem cell therapy helping dogs.  Now we have yet another dog helped by using his own Repair Stem Cells.

KC, a golden retriever was getting up in age- 11 years old.  He was beginning to slow down.  In his owner, Krista Moyes words, "He was having a hard time getting up in the morning and really wasn't walking at all on his back leg.

Krista took KC to the vet who said surgery wasn't an option, it was typical for a dog KC's age to start slowing down with arthritis and decreased range of motion in the legs- for KC it was the right leg.

The Vet, Dr. Lillian Rizzo suggested a new stem cell procedure.  This stem cell therapy was developed by Vet-Stem, a stem cell company for horses, dogs, and cats that uses the animal's own stem cells.

Dr. Rizzo then removed some fat tissue from KC, and sent it off to Vet-Stem where they isolate stem cells from the fat tissue and then send it back already packed in syringes and ready to go.

Then Dr. Rizzo simply injected the stem cells into the site of the injury and let the Repair Stem Cells do what they do best-- REPAIR

I'll let Dr. Rizzo have her say:

She explains, “I concentrate the stem cells at the site of injury and then the stem cells have mediated inflammation and repair. The injury to the joint cartilage and that's really the only thing that can do that. The medications can help with pain and support to the joint cartilage but the stem cells actually rebuild the damaged joint cartilage.

Dr. Rizzo says they are several benefits to this therapy. It is minimally invasive and pain medications may not be needed long term and you have a happier animal.

And the results???

I'll let KC's owner, Krista handle this one:

“Two weeks after the surgery I looked at him one day and he was standing on his foot instead of just his toe, Moyes says. “I really noticed an attitude change as far as his energy level he felt better so he was wrestling, carrying on and playing.

Moyes says she is just glad she got her old friend back. “If it was going to help him just a little bit I was willing to do it.

This is wonderful news and I'm very happy for Krista and KC.  However, wouldn't it be wonderful if we could make the same thing available for humans-  Repair Stem Cells- simple procedure, very little downside and it can help improve the quality of millions of lives.  If we had the will, this could be done now.
